Black History Month Event 2025: A Celebration of Leadership, Culture, and Community
In the UK, October is recognised as Black History Month, a time to honour the achievements, heritage, and contributions of Black communities across the nation.
This year, over 80 hospitality professionals joined us for a special celebration in partnership with COREcruitment on Thursday 23rd October 2025 at art’otel London Hoxton. Together, we explored leadership, culture, and community under the national theme “Standing Firm in Power and Pride.”
Led by Lorraine Copes, CEO and Founder of Be Inclusive Hospitality, the afternoon was filled with thought-provoking conversation, lived experience, and meaningful connection. Guests heard from an impressive roster of leaders across the hospitality industry in two powerful panels, a fireside chat, and a closing keynote.

The Power Panel: Influence, Leadership, and the Capacity to Effect Change
The afternoon opened with The Power Panel, a dynamic discussion on what inclusive leadership looks like in practice. Chaired by Kim Thabani Machipisa of Code Hospitality, the panel featured Lakeisha McNeil (Metropolitan Gaming), Claire Duesberry (Levy UK), Yasmin Rose (Marriott Hotels), and Sting Khumalo (Biltmore Mayfair).
Together, they explored how to drive meaningful change within organisations through coaching, emotional intelligence, and by creating psychologically safe environments that encourage uncomfortable but necessary conversations.
The discussion highlighted the importance of mentorship and advocacy, and how being seen and supported through initiatives like the Elevate Mentorship Programme can unlock career growth.
The panellists spoke candidly about representation and the need for visibility at every level of leadership to inspire the next generation.
Their collective message was clear:
“Leadership is about human connection. To drive change, you must go beyond the surface and truly understand people.”
Fireside Chat: From Passion to Purpose with Aji Akokomi
Our Fireside Chat featured Aji Akokomi, Founder of Akara and Akoko, who shared his journey from corporate life to culinary entrepreneurship.
He spoke about his vision to create a fine-dining experience that celebrates West African cuisine with pride, not as a passing trend, but as a global staple.
In addition, Aji reflected on building inclusive kitchens where staff feel valued, fairly compensated, and supported in their growth. These environments retain talent, inspire creativity, and sustain excellence.
His story revealed how he is reshaping perceptions of chefs within the African community. As a result, he is inspiring a new generation to see hospitality as a space for legacy, one that celebrates culture and pride.

The Pride Panel: Cultural Identity, Creativity, and Career
After a brief intermission, we returned for The Pride Panel, a humorous and heartfelt discussion celebrating culture, heritage, and creativity.
Led by Jade McKenzie (Shwen Shwen and Be Inclusive Hospitality Ambassador), the panel featured Fikayo Ifaturoti (Sommelier & Fine Wine Curator), Natalie Sheridan (BaxterStorey), and Ifeyinwa Frederick (Chuku’s).
From storytelling through wine to reimagining Nigerian home-style hospitality, each panellist revealed how their heritage fuels their craft. Moreover, they shared personal stories that reminded us that culture is not just an afterthought; it is the heartbeat of creativity.
Alongside the celebration came honest reflections on challenge. The panellists discussed funding inequity, cultural misrepresentation, and navigating bias as Black women in hospitality. They also reflected on the pressure to conform rather than lead authentically.
Their takeaway was powerful:
“Showing up authentically doesn’t silence you; it strengthens you. When we show up as our full selves, we make space for others to do the same”.
Keynote: Building Legacy with Intention
To close the afternoon, Tevin Tobun, CEO and Founder of GV Group and ROUTD, delivered an inspiring keynote that left the room both energised and reflective.
He reminded us that Black History is not a footnote but a foundation, a story that begins with strength, not struggle. Time and again, it reflects the enduring truth of Black communities: transforming limited resources into lasting impact, and turning adversity into advantage.
Furthermore, Tevin’s words served as both celebration and challenge. He urged us to build inclusive legacies that outlast us and to see Black History not just as a look back, but as a call forward.

Reflections and Key Takeaways
This year’s Black History Month event was more than a conversation, it was a catalyst. We left with a deeper understanding of how representation, mentorship, and authenticity can transform the culture of hospitality for generations to come.
Highlights from Our Speakers
Ifeyinwa Frederick – Chuku’s: “We are not a monolith.” A reminder of the diversity of lived experiences within the Black community. The call was clear, start with education, broaden your worldview, and use that understanding to influence your organisation.
Claire Duesberry – Levy UK: “Senior leaders might not know how to diversify their leadership team.” This challenge presents an opportunity to partner, build action plans, and drive transformation together.
Tevin Tobun – GV Group and ROUTD: “You can start small.” Change begins with courage, and every bold step counts on the journey to a more inclusive future.
